What is Pension Release?

Getting at the money from your pension is sometimes known as Pension Release; whether it is a Personal Pension or an old Company Pension.

You may want to do this even if you haven't retired yet but just need some money now, or you may be thinking about retirement and need to know your options.

If you're over 50 and have either a Personal Pension or old Company Pension you're not currently receiving, you can release your money now, even if your pension was originally set up to an older age, say 60 or 65.

You need to be careful because in April 2010 the minimum age you can unlock money from any type of pension is increasing by five years to 55.

Protected Rights

Protected Rights Pensions are from contracting out of the state pension scheme. You weren't allowed to get your money out of these types of pensions before age 60, however; the rules changed in April 2006 allowing you access from the age of 50. It's even possible now to release a cash lump sum, tax free, which was not allowed before.
